Growing up in the Midwest with cold extended months of winter weather I still played enough golf to earn “Duffer” as an adolescent nickname. Moving to Virginia was an easy decision as it meant I would never really have to put away the clubs for winter.

Skip Platt introduced me to hickory golf after I just admired his clubs on the range. The next week I played my first full hickory round with a hodgepodge of hickory clubs loaned to me by Skip, Eric Wagner, and Rick Woekoner and was hooked. Scoring an eagle two on Spring Creek’s signature par four 11th hole helped – – just two swings with an original Spalding brassie (which I now own). I now play 90% of my rounds with hickories although I occasionally put a metal driver in the bag for local Glenmore Club events.

My hickory highlights the past three years…medaling in several SOHG events including two US Hickory Opens, qualifying for the first official SOHG Ryder Cup Team in 2014, winning friendly wagers against golfers who insist on playing with their modern equipment, and having my best caddie Denise on the bag for the World Hickory Open in Scotland in 2013. But making new hickory acquaintances and friendships around the World and introducing new people to the game are what drive my passion for hickory golf.

Terry’s Hickory Bag

Irons:

I own two sets of replica irons – the Tad Moore Star OA’s and Louisville Golf’s Precision irons (George Nicoll replicas). When one set is in play the other is ready to be loaned out to introduce new players to the hickory game. Two additional irons are always in my bag – an RTJ replica PW / niblick and a Stewart Maiden replica sand wedge from Louisville Golf. I would someday love to own a full set of original Stewart’s or Nicoll’s irons – a goal that would surely test self-imposed family budgetary constraints, yet remains reasonably attainable provided my wife never reads this.

I enjoy hitting woods and my collection of them continues to grow. They do however go in and out of favor; some remain in extended periods of time-out, dependent on performance. Rarely do more than three woods earn the right to be in the bag at once, four at the very most.
