Don is the defending champion of the 2020 VaHGA Virginia Hickory Open.
“Being around golf and golf courses most of my life, from doing grounds work, hustling golf carts to managing a driving range with par 3 course. I had never seen anyone play with hickory golf clubs. While on a golf trip to Pinehurst, I saw some gentlemen playing hickory golf. I was fascinated at their dress and loved that sound of a golf ball being smacked with a persimmon wood… been a long time since I had heard that sound. I wanted to try hickories. It took about 4 years to finally get the chance. Bob Platt invited me to play 9 holes with him using hickories. I WAS HOOKED! I have played in The Mid Pines Open, The U. S. Hickory Open, The Virginia Hickory Open and Virginia Four Ball. I put two of my best hickory rounds together to win the 2020 Virginia Hickory Open and finished second with my partner in the Virginia Four Ball also in 2020. Playing hickories has been so much fun. Meeting fellow hickory players has been fun and exciting.”
