I have been playing golf since I was about 10 years old and grew up playing at the Country Club of Buffalo. I was introduced to hickory golf in 2014 after finishing up a round at Somerset Hills Country Club in New Jersey when my now-father-in-law asked me if I wanted to play a bonus 9 holes with hickories. After catching it thin a couple of times, I finally flushed one and had this “eureka” moment realizing that these clubs actually work.
Over the years I have played a greater proportion of my rounds with my hickories, as I find that I don’t score much worse than I do with my modern set (in fact, my career low of 73 was with my hickories) and I have a lot more fun.
There are many things I love about hickory golf, but one of my favorite things (other than a well-struck ball) is when caddies or fellow players have come up to me during or after a round to tell me that they’re inspired to try hickory golf.
